Most soccer jerseys are designed to make thousands of supporters look connected.

FC Copenhagen has taken the opposite approach.

Buy the club’s new 2026/27 third jersey and the pattern on your shirt may not look exactly like the one worn by the supporter standing next to you.

That is intentional.

FC Copenhagen and adidas created one large geometric motif inspired by Den Røde Plads — the Red Square — inside Copenhagen’s Superkilen urban park. Each jersey receives a different section of that larger design.

The result is unusually simple to explain:

No two shirts are exactly the same.

Released on 30 October 2026, the jersey does more than translate the colours and shapes of a Copenhagen landmark into sportswear. Its individuality reflects the story of Nørrebro itself — a culturally diverse neighbourhood where different backgrounds share the same public space.

And with the team scheduled to wear it for the first time on 2 November 2026, the shirt arrives at a particularly interesting moment for modern jersey culture.

One Pattern, Thousands of Different Shirts

The cleverest detail is not immediately obvious from a campaign photograph.

According to FC Copenhagen, the graphic used across the jersey was created as one large motif. Each individual shirt is effectively a different section of that wider pattern.

That means the placement of the angular shapes varies from jersey to jersey.

You cannot even select which version you receive when ordering through the club.

In an industry built around manufacturing thousands of replicas of the same design, that is a fascinating reversal.

Supporters still wear the same badge, the same colours and the same third kit.

But visually, each one remains slightly individual.

The Red Square Behind the FC Copenhagen Jersey

To understand why adidas designed the shirt this way, you have to leave the stadium and travel into Nørrebro.

Superkilen opened in 2012 as an urban public space created by Danish art collective SUPERFLEX in collaboration with Bjarke Ingels Group and landscape architects Topotek 1.

The park is divided into different visual zones, but Den Røde Plads is perhaps the most instantly recognisable.

Its intense red surfaces, lines and geometric forms create something closer to a giant piece of graphic design than a conventional city square.

Superkilen also carries a deeper idea.

Objects and cultural references from around 60 countries were incorporated into the wider park, with local residents involved in selecting elements that reflected their backgrounds.

The intention was not to make every culture look the same.

It was to create one shared space from many different identities.

How a Public Square Became a Soccer Shirt

Once you see Superkilen, the jersey begins to make considerably more sense.

The design is not simply using red because it looks dramatic.

  • Red and burgundy base → reflects the surfaces of Den Røde Plads while also using a colour that already exists within FC Copenhagen’s identity.
  • Angular geometric pattern → translates the lines, shapes and visual energy of the public square onto the shirt.
  • Different pattern placement → gives every physical jersey its own visual identity, echoing the individuality of the people who share Copenhagen.
  • White adidas Three Stripes → provide a clean contrast against the multiple shades of red.
  • Burgundy collar and cuffs → continue the tonal palette rather than introducing a completely separate colour.
  • Coat of arms at the back of the neck → keeps a club reference within a design otherwise dominated by the city.

Football Shirt Culture also notes the white adidas branding, FC Copenhagen crest with three stars, UNIBET across the chest and Carlsberg on the sleeve.

But the print remains the dominant feature.

A Uniform That Rejects Uniformity

There is an interesting contradiction at the heart of this jersey.

The entire purpose of a team uniform is normally consistency.

Eleven players enter the pitch wearing the same colours. Thousands of supporters buy replicas so they can visually identify themselves with the same club.

Copenhagen’s third shirt keeps that shared identity while deliberately introducing difference.

Everyone gets the same concept.

Nobody necessarily gets the exact same graphic placement.

That makes the design unusually well matched to Superkilen.

The park is a shared space built from different cultural references. The jersey is a shared uniform built from different pieces of the same visual composition.

SoccerBible described the concept as a reflection of both individuality and collective identity — and that is where the shirt becomes more interesting than a standard city-inspired kit.

From Nørrebro to Matchday

Timing makes the release especially interesting.

FC Copenhagen officially presented the shirt on 30 October 2026.

The club then confirmed that the men's team is scheduled to wear it for the first time on Monday, 2 November 2026, away against Sønderjyske in the Danish Superliga.

That puts the shirt in a short window between design object and match kit.

Right now, the story is about architecture, Copenhagen and the concept behind the print.

Once players walk onto the pitch wearing it, the design gains another chapter.

It is also a useful reminder of how third jerseys have changed.

They were once largely practical alternatives used when colours clashed.

Today, they often provide the creative space where clubs and manufacturers can experiment with culture, fashion, architecture and identity.

Why This Matters to Jersey Culture

The individually positioned print creates an unusual question for collectors.

Normally, two authentic replicas in the same size should look essentially identical.

Here, the variation is part of the product.

That does not automatically make one version rarer, more valuable or more collectible than another.

But it does change the relationship between owner and shirt.

Your jersey is not simply one item from a production run carrying exactly the same graphic placement.

Visually, it is your version of the design.

That is a subtle distinction, but in a culture where supporters increasingly care about details, production differences, namesets, patches and design stories, it matters.

Expert Verdict: One of the Smarter City-Inspired Jerseys

Plenty of clubs claim that a jersey is inspired by their city.

Often that means adding a map, landmark or architectural detail to an otherwise conventional shirt.

FC Copenhagen and adidas have gone further.

The strongest part of this design is the relationship between how the jersey is manufactured and what the place represents.

Superkilen brings different cultural references together within one public space.

The shirt brings supporters together under one club identity while allowing each physical jersey to look slightly different.

That is a concept you can understand before you even decide whether you like the actual pattern.

The red-on-red geometry will probably divide opinion. It is busy, highly graphic and considerably louder than a traditional minimalist Copenhagen shirt.

But as a third jersey, experimentation makes sense.

More importantly, the experiment has a reason to exist.

Collector Verdict

This is the kind of modern jersey collectors may remember less for a famous match and more for the idea behind its production.

The important distinction is that unique does not necessarily mean rare.

FC Copenhagen has not said that every variation has a different production number or that particular pattern placements are more valuable.

What is verified is more interesting from a design perspective: each shirt carries a different portion of the larger motif.

That makes the individual garment part of the story.

For supporters, the shirt connects club and city.

For design fans, it connects architecture and sportswear.

And for collectors, it introduces something unusual:

You can own the same jersey as somebody else without owning exactly the same jersey.
